What is the difference between cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries?
Cosmetic surgery is an elective surgery performed to enhance or reshape an otherwise normal physical feature of the body. A cosmetic procedure is done to improve the appearance of this feature and boost the patient’s self-confidence. When a cosmetic procedure is entirely elective, it is customarily not covered by health insurance.
Reconstructive surgery is performed to repair a physical abnormality caused by birth defects, developmental defects, injuries and accidents, infection, tumors and disease. Reconstructive procedures typically provide enhanced function and a more natural appearance. Most health insurance plans provide some type of coverage for reconstructive surgery.
